Part of living in Calgary is living with the occasional hail storm. Unfortunately that often means also living with the hail damage. We can put our cars and bikes in our garage, and even if they are left out, accessing the damage on your car is pretty easy. However, we can’t protect our roofs from the weather, so how do you know if your roof fared okay?
The easiest way to know if your roof has been damaged may be to call a Calgary roofer.
After all, we’ll be able to take a look and let you know right away whether your roof is fine and approximately how long you have before needing a replacement. Besides, if you choose to inspect your roof yourself, and you find substantial problems, you’ll need to have an inspector or roofer take a look anyways before making an insurance claim.
Once we’re up on your roof, we’ll examine your metal roof vents, flashing, and valleys. These areas are often dented by hail and will give clues to how large the ice pebbles were. Then we’ll check the shingles. The edges of a shingle are much more vulnerable to damage, but it’s important to look over the whole shingle. Any missing pieces, exposed black substrate, cracks, dents, or bruising can indicate damage. One or two injuries isn’t too much to worry about, but any more than that can lead to leaks.
If a roof has clear hail damage, the next step is to calculate just how much.
This is usually done by dividing the roof into squares about 10 feet by 10 feet in proportion. You’ll have to ask your insurance company what their policy is, but often 8 to 10 hail strikes meeting your insurance provider’s definition of “functional damage” within the 10ft. by 10ft. square will warrant a replacement of at least part of the roof. The older your roof, the more likely your insurance company is to replace it.
Whether your roof is replaced or not, any amount of hail damage is unfortunate and frustrating. To prevent hail damage in the future, we suggest rubber roofing. Rubber roofing uses rubber from old tires. That means it’s not only the best option in Calgary for preventing roof damage from hail, but it’s also helping to keep old tires out of our landfills.
