There are a ton of different types of roofing materials. Thatch roofing made from overlapping plant stalks is as popular in fantastical fiction now as it was in Europe and England many years ago. Eastern Asia also had a form of thatch roofing made from rice stalk. Ceramic clay tiles have been used since ancient Greece and Rome. Amazingly, some of these tiles are still in use today. However, as neat as some of these roofing materials are, they just don’t seem to hold up in our crazy Canadian climate. Here’s three materials that do:
Asphalt Shingles. Invented in North America, asphalt shingles continue to dominate the roofing industry in Canada. It makes sense, they’re relatively inexpensive and easy to install. When attached to a fiberglass base, they’re also fire resistant. These shingles are a good choice for our hot summers as they reflect away solar energy. This helps to lower air conditioning needs. However, wind resistance varies, and they are susceptible to hail damage. All in all, you shouldn’t expect asphalt shingles to survive our Calgary weather to the full warranty length. Check out our page on asphalt shingles for more information.
Rubber Roofing. Probably one of the best roofing solutions for our climate is rubber roofing. Created from mostly recycled tires, rubber roofing is an eco-conscious choice. It is also more or less hail proof and fireproof. Like asphalt it reflects heat away during the summer lowering A.C. costs, however, rubber is also an excellent insulator and traps heat in during winter. Rubber roofing is easy to work with, usually simple to repair, and often lasts for up to 50 years! G.E.M. inc. which was founded right here in Calgary, is the largest provider and number one choice for rubber roofing in Calgary.
Concrete Tile. Earlier, we mentioned clay tiles used in ancient Greece and Rome that are still around today thousands of year later. While, the clay tiles can’t survive the Canadian winter — they crack and shatter in our freeze thaw cycles — concrete tiles are a solution that can stand our climate. Concrete tile roofing like its predecessor is extremely durable and long lasting. However, the extra weight from the concrete means you must have your home’s sturdiness evaluated. It’s important to note that many Calgary roofers don’t work with concrete tiles regularly. Any type of roofing is only as good as it is installed. If you decide to use concrete tile roofing (and your house is found sturdy enough to support it), you’ll have to be even more careful than usual to choose a reputable Calgary roofer.
